Located 148 km. from the city of Arequipa, the fabulous Colca Valley should be a must for
history and nature lovers visiting Peru.
The most amazing landscapes start in the town of Chivay and go along for around 60 km all the way to a “mirador” (observation point) called La Cruz del Condor. From here the valley narrows down giving berth to the famous Colca Canyon, one of the deepest in the world (its depth has been calculated at about 3,680 meters, twice the depth of the Colorado Canyon). A spectacular array of “andenes” (platforms) considered one of the largest ones in Peru covers the area. This amazing architectural, hydraulic and agricultural work is believed to have been built between the years 900 and 1400 AC. It is built in such a way that it permits a thorough and detailed control of the irrigation waters in the steep slopes of the valley.
